Heather Morss has shaped the Golden Retriever in Britain for over five decades — as breeder, Crufts CC judge, Royal Kennel Club member, and international specialist across four continents.
The Xanthos story
A foundation built in 1970 that still wins today
Heather's first Golden Retriever was a present from her parents in 1970 — a son of Champion Camrose Cabus Christopher, one of the most influential sires in breed history. She became absolutely hooked.
In 1976 she purchased a bitch puppy by Champion Nortonwood Faunus out of Gyrima Bernadina. From that foundation, the Xanthos line was established at Blackthorns, Rye Common, Odiham, Hampshire. First CCs followed in 1992 — and the programme has never stopped producing.
Over fifty years, more than twenty UK CC winners have carried the Xanthos name — most going on to take their full title, and two reaching the UK Championship Gundog Group final. Xanthos dogs have worked during the shooting season, run in Field Trials, served as assistance dogs, and become champions on four continents.

The judge
A career at the highest level of the sport
Heather first awarded Challenge Certificates in 1992 and has since judged extensively across the UK and internationally — Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Australia and New Zealand among her appointments.
In 2013 she judged at Crufts — the pinnacle of the British show calendar and the world's largest dog show. It remains one of the most coveted appointments a breed specialist can receive.
Her critiques, published on the Kennel Club judges database, are studied by exhibitors for their precision and depth of breed knowledge.
